The Story Of Tilt Coffee: Little Space, Big Story
Tilt Coffee is the small, grey coffee shop on 4th Avenue, opposite 27 boxes. It has a cape-dutch architectural design. It’s been in Melville for 6 years and has changed hands 3 times. The founders were a couple - Leah and Wayne who managed to sell just in time to avoid the pandemic. They sold to a Melville resident, and pilot named Rudi who managed to steer the ship through the pandemic safely by selling coffee beans and operating as a walkthrough coffee shop. He then decided to semi-grate to the Karoo and sell the coffee shop. When Darren and Jacquelin Joubert, (regulars back then) heard that their beloved breakfast and coffee stop could close down, they roped in some of the family, discussed the possibility, and without hesitation pulled the trigger in June/July 2023. "We're originally from Devilsdorp” chuckled Darren referring to Krugersdorp, Westrand. They bought a home in Melville 5 years ago now. The members of this well-learned family conglomerate balance each other out perfectly leveraging their skills to create a cohesive team. Darren and his father work full-time at Tilt Coffee, while his mother, sister, and brother-in-law all have day jobs and chip in when they can. This collaborative dynamic allows them to manage the daily operations while brainstorming and executing new ideas. They did just that with their recently ended pop-up shop in Bryanston sports club and their mobile trailer, designed by Darren’s engineer brother-in-law.
The couple quickly grew fond of the community and its vibe saying its proximity to everything, the vibe and the people were significant in their choosing to stay and invest here. “Melville creeps up on you unexpectedly” expressed Darren. He appreciates the community and its spirit, adding that people in Melville care about the area. The decision to buy Tilt as a family venture was backed by a desire to be a part of this community. They wanted to ensure that the coffee shop which had become a popular spot for them to visit, continued to thrive. Darren and Jacqui lived in Cape Town for 6 years before moving here. Living in the Cape influenced their decision to get into the Coffee biz joking that they didn’t go the wine route “We went coffee.” He feels that although the Cape Town coffee scene is reaching its peak, Joburg’s industry is still in its growth phase.
Tilt Coffee shop is small. The minimalist decor, and large windows that allow light to flood in give a peaceful illusion of spaciousness. You never feel crowded. It is a beautiful, simple, black-and-white colour scheme with dark, brown vintage doors. They have a big menu board and warm lantern-like lights above the counter. The shop counter also doubles as a baked goodies display showcasing yummy-looking, carefully designed treats. Their unique architectural design sets it apart from other coffee shops. The scale and vintage-modern style fit right into Melville's look.
Tilt Coffee’s menu is neatly organised into several sections, boasting a wide variety of coffee and drinks options like Dirty Chai, a light roast section and seasonal drinks too. I gave the coffee Freezo a try and went with the Baked Cheesecake and the Humming Bird Cupcake. The Freezo was just what I needed during last week’s blistering heatwave. It came in a tall and thick glass filled to the brim with an eco-friendly straw (not paper) and is R55, the Cheesecake is R55 per slice too, and R500 for a whole cake. The cheesecake was as good as they say, what a treat! The slice was a pale cream colour, sitting on a crunchy golden brown crust. The middle was a smooth and dense texture with a rich, cheesy and zesty lemon taste. It had a hardish layer of a light browning crust on top that added a custardy caramelized flavour.
The Humming Bird Cupcake had a lovely presentation. A gourmet approach to a classic favourite, elevating the humble carrot cake into a more refined treat. It’s a carrot cake with icing and coconut shavings on top, except instead of carrots they use pineapple. They garnish it with purple edible (I hope) flowers. The flower garnishing tied in beautifully with the plants in the store and the one wall near the counter that has floral decor. The cupcake was as tasty as it looked, improving with every bite. It has a moist slightly dense texture with crunchy carrot-like bits (pineapple). Over all this was an excellent taste experience, 9/10. We highly recommend eating here.
We drew the chat to a close by asking Darren what his most memorable moment was and what he loved about this amazing neighbourhood. We got another "The Happening Event" answer! His two most memorable moments are; when the rock band was playing on the roof of NXT LVL making for a majestic scene and when it rained in the late afternoon and people rushed into Tilt Coffee for cover. He says that no one bought anything “but it was filled with a hectically diverse group of people, everyone was playing music. It was such a great vibe to see everyone just getting together, it kind of embodies what Melville is. No matter who you are, where you’re from, or how you’re living life, there is a spot for you somewhere here.
Leaving the best for last, what does he love the most about Melville? “I love the people in Melville, hey, people in Melville are great. You get such a diverse worldview of everything here. You can’t guess what someone is really gonna say. You think like, okay I’m gonna pose this because I know how someone is gonna react, you’re not gonna get a negative improvement of the answer that you were gonna say, but it’s very seldom what you’re gonna expect. And it’s just that the people of Melville care about Melville which is great. From Gayle doing what she does with the cats to Danny and them and Cobi and just everyone putting the work into Melville.” He finished off strongly by saying “It’s nice to be in a diverse community and a community that actually gives a damn! The community really cares about Melville and that’s what keeps it like it is. That’s what makes it special!”
